Student visa (subclass 500)
If you intend to study in Australia, you will need to apply for the Student visa (subclass 500).
There is specific information for Foreign Affairs and Defence sponsored students and school sector students.
Your eligible family members can:
- Accompany you to Australia if you have included them in your visa application.
- Join you in Australia after you have been granted your visa as a subsequent entrant. You must have declared these family members in your student visa application.
Australia maintains a website entitled Study in Australia, which provides information for international students studying and living in Australia. You can locate information on Australian education providers, courses, scholarship programs, testimonials from international students and other general information on studying in Australia. Students can apply to undertake two or more courses on their Student (subclass 500) visa where there is clear progression from one course to another. This is known as course packaging.

Student Guardian visa (subclass 590)
If you plan to come to Australia to provide care to a student under 18 years, you can apply for the Student Guardian visa (subclass 590).
This visa allows you to stay in Australia as the guardian of an international student younger than 18 years of age studying in Australia on a student visa.
Eligibility
You must:
- Be the student’s parent, legal guardian or relative.
- Have enough money to support yourself and the student during your stay.
- Be able to provide accommodation and other support.
- Be at least 21 years of age.

Up to five years
Training visa (subclass 407)
For training opportunities which allow you to take part in structured workplace-based training, you may be eligible for the Training visa (subclass 407).

Features
This visa allows you to:
- Take part in workplace-based training to enhance your skills in your current occupation, an area of tertiary study, a field of expertise.
- Participate in a professional development training program in Australia.
This visa is not appropriate for persons whose sole intention is to work.
Eligibility
You must:
- Be nominated (unless your sponsor is a Commonwealth Government agency).
- Be invited (if your sponsor is a Commonwealth Government agency).
- Usually be at least 18 years of age.

Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485)
If you have finished your studies and wish to work in Australia temporarily, you may be eligible for the post-study work visa, the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485).
Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485)
Features
This visa is for international students who have recently graduated from an Australian educational institution.
It lets you live, study and works in Australia temporarily after you have finished your studies. Students are only able to access the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) once as a primary applicant.
The visa has two streams:
- Graduate Work stream.
- Post-Study Work stream.
If you are applying as the main applicant, you and anybody else covered by the application must be in Australia when you apply for this visa and when your visa is decided.
Eligibility
You must:
- Be under 50 years of age.
- Hold an eligible visa.
- Have a recent qualification in a CRICOS-registered course.
- Meet additional requirements of the relevant stream.
The qualification must either:
- Relate to an occupation on the skilled occupation list (Graduate Work stream).
- Be a higher education degree (Post-Study Workstream).
Length of stay
- Graduate Work stream – 18 months.
- Post-Study Work stream – two to four years.
